About the Competition

‘Re-imagining Fundamental Duties’ is an event for law and non-law students from across the country to redraft the Constitution’s fundamental duties as is today under Article 51-A. The main aim of the event is to provide an opportunity to identify and express contemporary challenges that the country faces today and how fundamental duties, as a legislative tool, plays an active role in the country’s growth and prosperity. The event is being organised as a part of constitution week conducted by St. Joseph’s College of Law, Bengaluru. 

‘Re-Imagining Fundamental Duties’ is a drafting competition. The submission must consist of two parts: 

  1. The participants will be required to re-draft Article 51 A and 
  2. Provide a statement of reasons.

The participants are expected to draft the list of fundamental duties, keeping in mind the current circumstances, requirements and challenges. The participants are expected to give a detailed explanation to their draft, stating the reasons for each duty, which will come under the heading ‘Statement of Reasons’.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Any law student pursuing 3 Year/ 5 Year LLB or LLM in a recognised law college/university may participate.
  2. The participant may register individually or as a team (Maximum 2 in a team).
  3. A maximum of 3 registrations allowed from each institution.

Submission Guidelines

    1. The submission must be made in a single word document (.doc or .docx) form. It should consist of both the parts required, i.e., the redrafted Article 51A and the Statement of Reasons. The file should be renamed in the following format: “Name of the Participant_Name of the Institution”, for eg: “ThomasAndrews_SJCL”. 
    2. The participants must refrain from mentioning their names or institutional affiliations in their submission, except in the title. 
    3. The submission must be made in English only.
    4. Formatting guidelines:
      Font Size – 12
      Font – Times New Roman
      Line Spacing – 1.5
      Alignment – Justified
    5. The Statement of Reasons must not exceed 500-750 words. Any submission that exceeds the word limit shall be subjected to disqualification.
    6. The Draft should be an original work and no plagiarism beyond 15% will be accepted.
    7. The submission should be structurally coherent. No grammatical errors and repetitions will be entertained.
    8. The participants’ submission will be evaluated based on conformity with rules, vernacular efficiency, subject matters covered and the standard of explanation given in the Statement of Reasons.
    9. The document must be submitted only through the Google form link attached herewith. No other mode of submission will be accepted.
    10. The last date of submission is 26th November 2022. The results will be declared on 7th December 2022. 

General Guidelines

  1. The decision of the judges shall be final and binding on all participants.
  2. The Institute’s decision regarding the interpretation of rules or any other matter relating to the competition will be final.
  3.  If there is any situation not contemplated in the rules, the decision of the Institute shall be final.

Awards:

The winners will be awarded with cash prizes as follows:

  • 1st Place – INR 4,000
  • 2nd Place – INR 3,000
  • 3rd Place – INR 2,000

The winners will receive e-certificates along with the cash prize. All participants upon submission, will receive e-certificates for participation.
