Centre for Criminal Justice Studies invites submissions for the 1st RVU National Essay Competition 2023 on Criminal Law. The last date for submission is December 24, 2023

About School of Law, RV University 

The School of Law at RV University wishes to strive for academic and research excellence. It joins the existing five schools of RVU providing courses in liberal arts & sciences, design, economics, business, and computer science & engineering. It aims to provide the students an opportunity to explore intersections between law and other disciplines such as business, economics, social sciences, technology and public policy. 

About Centre for Criminal Justice Studies

The centre aims to enhance awareness of contemporary issues within criminal law and the administration of criminal justice. It strives to stimulate meaningful discussions in the field of criminal law and its associated disciplines by providing a platform for relevant academic discourse. The centre endeavours to initiate and sustain engaging conversations among students concerning various aspects of criminal law studies.

Following are the suggested themes for the competition:

  • Intersection of religion and criminal law
  • Recent criminal law amendments
  • Alternate dispute resolution mechanism in criminal law
  • Punishment & Sentencing
  • Influence of social and cultural factors on criminal law 
  • Use of forensic evidence in criminal investigations and trials 
  • Reforms in Indian Criminal law 
  • Indian jurisprudence on marital rape
  • Impact of technological developments on criminal law
  • Death Penalty: Balancing Justice and Morality
  • Wrongful convictions: Miscarriage of justice
  • Rights of the accused
  • Victim justice
  • Crime against women 
  • Witness protection 
  • Corporate criminal liability 

Note: The above themes are only suggestive. We invite essays on other relevant topics on criminal law.  

Eligibility 

The competition is open to students pursuing: 

  1. Higher secondary education (11th and 12th std.); and
  2. Undergraduate course in law. 

Registration & Submission

Interested candidates may register for the competition by 15 December, 2023 through the link provided towards the end of this post. All submissions are to be electronically mailed only to ccjs@rvu.edu.in in .doc/.docx format by 11:59 pm, December 24, 2023.

Formatting guidelines

    • Word limit: 2,000 to 3,000 words (exclusive of footnotes)
    • Page Size: A4 
    • Pagination: The pagination must be done at the bottom of the page. 
  • Citation Format: Any uniform citation style can be followed. No particular citation style is required for submissions by school students.
  • Text Font: Times New Roman; Font Size: 12 points; Line Spacing: 1.5.
  • Footnotes Font: Times New Roman; Font Size: 10 points; Line Spacing: 1.

Submission Guidelines

  • Submissions shall be made in the online mode only.
  • Submissions need to be original. Plagiarism shall result in disqualification.
  • Co-authorship is permitted up to a maximum of two authors.
  • Name and affiliation of author(s) shall be attached separately in mail. Any identification mark in the essay shall lead to disqualification.
  • Essays submitted shall neither be published previously nor be under consideration for publication.
  • Essays will be evaluated on the following criteria: relevance of the topic, depth of analysis, cogency of arguments, feasibility of suggestions, structure, language, and references in support.

Prizes

The top three entries in the higher secondary category will be awarded the following cash prizes:

  • 1st Prize: ₹ 10,000/-
  • 2nd Prize: ₹ 5,000/-
  • 3rd Prize: ₹ 3,000/-

The top three entries in the undergraduate category will be awarded the following cash prizes:

  • 1st Prize: ₹ 10,000/-
  • 2nd Prize: ₹ 5,000/-
  • 3rd Prize: ₹ 3,000/-

The top 5 entries in each category shall be published on the CCJS Criminal Law Blog (subject to review process). All the participants who successfully submit the essay before November 30, 2023 shall be eligible to receive a Certificate of Participation.
