About the Institute and Project
The Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL), Heidelberg, is one of the world’s leading research centres for international and comparative public law. The position is offered within the ICCAL Collaboration Lab – Comparative Public Law for Democratic Resilience in Europe and Latin America, led by Prof. Dr. Armin von Bogdandy.

The Lab brings together transatlantic teams of scholars to explore how constitutional law can strengthen democracy in times of crisis, comparing experiences from Europe and Latin America.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on German constitutional law, especially the jurisprudence of the Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht)

  • Engage in comparative analysis, linking German constitutional practice with developments in Latin America

  • Collaborate with international scholars on constitutional design, judicial review, and democratic resilience

  • Contribute to academic publications, workshops, and conferences under the ICCAL framework

Eligibility and Skills

  • Strong background in German constitutional law

  • Interest in comparative constitutional law and interregional perspectives

  • Knowledge of Spanish is an asset, though not required

  • Openness to engage with democratic resilience debates across Europe and Latin America
