About the Panel
As part of the International Conference of Europeanists (CES), to be held from 16–18 June 2026 in Dublin, a panel on Migration Politics and Authoritarianism in Europe is being convened by Saskia Bonjour (University of Amsterdam) and chaired by Adrian Favell (University College Cork). The panel seeks to critically examine how migration politics contribute to the rise of authoritarianism in Europe, highlighting the role of both Far Right and ‘mainstream’ political actors, as well as institutional and societal responses.
Eligibility

Scholars of migration politics and related fields.

Junior faculty and PhD researchers are especially encouraged to apply (limited travel grants available).

Please note: the panel will take place in person, and virtual participation is not possible.
Themes for Contribution

Discursive shifts, electoral strategies, and policy choices driving authoritarianism in Europe.

The role of migration politics in blurring the boundaries between the Far Right and mainstream parties.

Responses from courts, media, civil servants, and civil society to authoritarian shifts in migration governance.
How to Apply
Submit a title and abstract (maximum 250 words) along with your name and affiliation to s.a.bonjour@uva.nl by 27 September 2025.
Decisions on inclusion in the panel will be communicated by 1 October 2025. The CES organizers will confirm panel acceptance by 18 December 2025.
