A Special Issue on Democratic Backsliding in South Asia is being organised under the editorship of Prof. Ahsan Ullah, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The issue seeks to examine the causes, processes, and consequences of democratic regression in South Asia, with a focus on institutional erosion, civic freedoms, populist politics, and the regional as well as global implications of these shifts.

Eligibility:

  • Open to scholars in political science, sociology, law, international relations, and related fields.

  • Early career researchers and comparative perspectives are especially encouraged.

Themes of Interest (illustrative):

  • Erosion of democratic institutions, norms, and values

  • Authoritarian populism, nationalism, and religion in politics

  • Electoral integrity and the role of political parties

  • Civil society, media freedom, and digital repression

  • Comparative perspectives on democratic resilience and resistance
