The United Nations University (UNU), in collaboration with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), invites applications for the Early Career Climate Fellowship Programme, based in Bonn, Germany. This prestigious initiative provides young professionals from developing countries a unique platform to begin their careers at the intersection of international climate policy and scientific research.

About the Programme
The fellowship aims to strengthen capacity among early-career professionals from developing nations by providing exposure to global climate policy processes and applied research. Fellows will work closely with experts at UNU-EHS/UNU-VIE and UNFCCC, gaining practical insights into international climate governance.

Duration: 1 year (extendable by one additional year, based on performance)
Location: Bonn, Germany
Number of Fellowships: Up to 12 per cohort

Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 32 years or younger at the time of application.

  • Originate from a developing country (priority for women from Least Developed Countries).

  • Hold or be enrolled in the final term of a master’s or doctoral degree in a field relevant to climate policy, environmental science, or sustainable development.

  • Demonstrate academic excellence and strong English communication skills.

  • Candidates with up to two years of relevant professional experience (including internships or assistant positions) are eligible.

  • No international experience is required; graduates from Global South institutions are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should embody UN values of inclusion, integrity, humility, and humanity, and demonstrate the ability to:

  • Collaborate effectively in diverse, interdisciplinary teams.

  • Analyse data and propose evidence-based climate solutions.

Applications will be accepted between 1 October 2025 and 31 October 2025 (23:59 CET).
A complete application package must include:

  1. Cover Letter (1 page) – outlining qualifications, experience, and preferred working areas at UNU-EHS/VIE and UNFCCC.

  2. CV (maximum 2 pages).

  3. Completed UNU Personal History Form (P11).

  4. Academic transcripts and degree certificates (compiled into a single PDF).
