The Academy on Human Rights at American University Washington College of Law, in collaboration with the American Society of International Law, is inviting submissions for the 2026 Human Rights Essay Award. This award encourages scholarly articles on “The right to protest under international human rights law: legal protection and challenges ahead.” Winning essays will be considered for publication in the American University International Law Review.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must hold a law degree.

  • Open to scholars interested in international human rights law, including international humanitarian law and international criminal law.

  • Essays can be submitted in English or Spanish.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit an original academic essay addressing the 2026 essay topic.

  • Ensure the essay aligns with international human rights law principles and scholarship.

  • Selected essays will be eligible for publication and recognition by the Academy on Human Rights.
