About the Opportunity
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) invites applications for the role of Project Assistant to support its research and outreach under the Witness Protection Scheme in Karnataka project. This is a full-time, in-person role based in Bengaluru and will require travel across Karnataka. The position is available until December 2025.
About the Project
Witness testimony is central to India’s criminal justice system, yet it is often compromised by threats and intimidation. The new Section 398 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023 mandates every state to formulate its own witness protection rules. This project will:
- Conduct four stakeholder consultations: three district visits (Belagavi, Udupi, Mysuru) and one consultation at NLSIU, Bengaluru
- Engage a broad stakeholder base: police, judiciary, KSLSA, NALSA, NGOs, think tanks
- Produce a Stakeholder Analysis & Outcome Document that maps gaps, defines stakeholder roles, and suggests actionable recommendations for a state-level framework
Role & Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate consultations, travel, and logistics
- Draft briefing notes, interview protocols, and preparatory reading materials
- Liaise with justice-sector stakeholders and maintain contact databases
- Collect and synthesize consultation data for analytical outputs
- Draft and maintain monthly progress and budget reports in line with NLSIU and donor requirements
- Manage invoicing, reimbursements, and internal approvals
- Support research and administrative functions as required
Qualifications
Essential:
- Graduate degree in Law, Social Sciences, Public Policy, Criminology, or allied fields
- Demonstrated interest in criminal justice or access-to-justice work
- Working knowledge of MS Excel and basic budgeting
Desirable:
- Master’s degree in Law, Public Policy, or related disciplines
- Prior experience in fieldwork, coordination, or legal research
- Experience working with police, judiciary, or civil society stakeholders
- Fluency in spoken Kannada
- Willingness to travel across Karnataka
Skills & Competencies
- Excellent written and oral communication
- Strong coordination and time management
- High attention to detail (especially in budgeting and documentation)
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Compensation
₹50,000 – ₹60,000 per month, based on qualifications and experience.
