The Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ) at Northwestern University in Qatar invites outstanding candidates for two postdoctoral fellowships focused on the histories, cultures, societies, and media of the Global South.

About #IAS_NUQ

#IAS_NUQ produces and promotes evidence-based storytelling on the Global South, combining liberal arts, media, communication, and journalism to foster interdisciplinary approaches to knowledge. Fellows work in a multilingual and multimodal environment, collaborating on research groups, publications, lectures, screenings, workshops, and conferences. The institute is located at NU-Q’s state-of-the-art campus in Education City, Doha, with opportunities for collaboration across universities, libraries, museums, and media institutions.

Fellowship Overview

Global Postdoctoral Scholars integrate primary sources, linguistic and regional expertise, and theoretically inflected, historically informed, comparative, translocal, and transnational scholarship. Scholars using non-Western theories, sources, and contexts are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants may focus on one or more of the following research themes:

  • Genealogies and Epistemologies of the Global South

  • Arab Media, Culture, and Politics

  • Southern Digitalities (digital cultures, critical/cultural AI, data studies, digital advocacy)

  • Critical Security Studies

We welcome scholars:

  • Conducting comparative or transnational research on media, culture, or politics in or between the Arab world, Latin America, and Africa.

  • Using humanistic approaches to Arab media in broader historical, cultural, social, or political contexts.

  • Working on Southern Digitalities, including digital cultures, AI/data studies, infrastructure, or digital advocacy in the Global South.

Eligibility

Applicants should have completed or expect to complete a PhD between Jan 1, 2024, and June 1, 2026.

Application Requirements

  1. Cover Page: Include name, contact info, dissertation supervisor, defense date, and 100-word project abstract.

  2. Research Proposal (≤1,000 words): Research questions, significance, theoretical framework, methodology, primary sources, language skills, and work plan.

  3. Statement of Institutional Fit (≤250 words): Alignment with #IAS_NUQ mission and research themes.

  4. CV (≤2 pages): Degrees, publications, creative/public scholarship, invited talks, conference papers, language skills.

  5. Project Bibliography (≤1 page): Primary and secondary sources.

  6. Letters of Recommendation: Three letters, including one from the dissertation supervisor.

  7. Publications: Up to two publications (≤50 pages in total).

Deadline: Submit all materials (except letters) as a single PDF to ias@qatar.northwestern.edu by 1 December 2025. Letters should also be sent by the same date.

Interviews: Finalists contacted by early January 2026, with final decisions by early February 2026.

  • Postdoctoral Scholars are residential, expected to work at NU-Q campus at least four days a week.
