Call for Papers: Digital Archives – Agency, Activism, and Contestation | Abstracts Due 2 February 2026

Email

The Heritage, Memory and Conflict Journal, in collaboration with the Horizon Europe Twinning project DIGHT-Net, is inviting submissions for a special issue titled “Digital Archives: Agency, Activism, and Contestation.”

About the Special Issue

Archives have traditionally served as sites of record-keeping, preservation, and the actualization of the past. In the digital age, archives extend beyond traditional institutions, encompassing websites, databases, social media platforms, and personal cloud storage.

These digital spaces are far from neutral. They are often contested, becoming arenas where digital activism challenges dominant narratives and reshapes heritage representation. Algorithmic bias, echo chambers, and platform governance raise key questions:

  • Who holds agency within the digital archive?

  • How can the archive itself act as an agent?

This special issue seeks contributions that critically engage with digital archives at the intersection of agency, activism, and contestation.
