About the Opportunity

The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA-UAB) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is offering six fully-funded PhD scholarships under its third María de Maeztu Excellence Initiative (MICIU).

This interdisciplinary research programme focuses on addressing complex socio-environmental challenges through innovative, justice-oriented, and globally relevant approaches.

Research Framework

The programme explores four cross-cutting themes:

• Critical Data Interventions

These themes intersect with five societal challenges:
• Oceans

• Consumption
• Policies

Research Objectives

The initiative’s 10 strategic projects, involving over 50 researchers, aim to:
• Advance environmental justice and equitable climate adaptation
• Explore grassroots innovations and sustainable rural development
• Improve urban sustainability, mobility, and public health
• Develop data-driven tools for environmental monitoring and policymaking
• Promote international collaboration, open science, and inclusive training
