ABOUT THE MOOT COURT COMPETITION

Moot courts are vital for law students as they offer practical legal skills, courtroom experience, and opportunities for honing research, oral advocacy, and writing abilities. These competitions foster critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving while building confidence and valuable networks with legal professionals. Participating in moot courts enhances a student’s resume and provides a competitive edge in the legal job market, making them well-prepared for a successful career in law. Moot court competitions are pivotal in equipping law students with practical knowledge, technical expertise, and the confidence to excel in the legal profession. By immersing themselves in these simulated court experiences, aspiring legal professionals develop the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of the field. Moot courts allow young law students to apply their theoretical knowledge in arguing for hypothetical cases. Moot court competitions emulate the actual trial process and are organized by law colleges/universities as well as eminent legal institutions.

THEME

The case revolves around allegations of dowry harassment, privacy violation, and matrimonial cruelty—raising Constitutional issues of liberty and privacy, criminal law issues under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and family law issues of divorce and custody.

FORMAT OF THE COMPETITION

Moot court competition will be conducted in researcher’s test and 3 rounds

  • Researcher’s Test :- The test will be of qualifying nature and evaluation will be based on the discretion of the coordinator and moot court club . The teams who clear the researcher test will be eligible for preliminary round .
  • First round (Preliminary Round) – It will be qualifying nature. All the teams will start their mooting process and out of the all the team’s best 4 will be taken to the next round after the consideration of marks given by the judges. If there are odd number of registrations one team will be disqualified on the basis of the researcher’s test.
  • Second Round (Semi finals) – In this round the selected teams will perform the next round of their mooting process and out of 4 the best 2 will be taken for the final round.
  • Third Round (Finals) – This will be the final round of moot court competition. Only 2 teams will have opportunity to reach in final round and we will get winner team after this round.

 1.    ELIGIBILITY

  • The competition shall be open to students who are pursuing an integrated 5-year LL.B. program or pursuing a 3-year LL.B. program from recognized University/Institution approved by Bar Council of India.
  • Each team shall consist of 3 members, (two ‘Speakers’ and one ‘Researcher’)

Maximum of 3 members in a team are allowed.

  • No additional member or team coach is allowed to accompany the team.
  • Multiple teams from same institution are permitted to participate in the competition .

2.     TEAM COMPOSITION

Each team participating in the Competition should consist of 3members only. One member will register as a Researcher and 2 as speakers

3.     LANGUAGE AND DRESS CODE

  • The official language of the competition will be English.
  • The dress code to be adhered to for the duration of the competition is:
    • Girls: Black salwar and white kurta or white shirt and black trousers, black tie along with black blazer and black shoes.
    • Boys: White shirt, black trousers and black tie along with black blazer and black shoes.

Note: The participating teams shall also adhere to the above-mentioned dress code while attending the inaugural and valedictory ceremonies of the competition.

Clarification Window (for Moot Proposition)

Participating teams may request clarifications on the moot problem.

All    queries    must    be     submitted    to    the    organizing           committee           via   email            at

mootcourt.fjs@ramauniversity.ac.in by 25th September.

A compiled list of clarifications will be released by 30th September 2025.

Code of Conduct

  • Teams must maintain professional decorum and courtroom discipline throughout the event.

Disqualification may occur for:

  • Use of foul/derogatory language or misbehavior with judges/organizers
  • Plagiarism should not exceed more than 10 % in memorials
  • Identification of institution in memorial or oral submissions
  • Scouting (observing rounds of other teams)
  • Participants must adhere to all timelines strictly. Delay beyond 5 minutes for a scheduled round may lead to disqualification.

4.     MEMORIAL SUBMISSION

  • Participants shall submit THREE hard copies of the memorial to the respective faculty coordinators.
  • One copy of the memorial shall also be submitted to respective mail id.
  • Delay in the hard copies shall invite a penalty.

5.     MEMORIAL FORMAT

  • FOR ALL PART OF MEMORIAL EXCEPT THE COVER PAGE & FOOTNOTES –
    • Font Style: Times New Roman
    • Font Size: 12
    • Line Spacing: 1.5
    • Margins: Equal with at least 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides.

(C)  COVER PAGE

  • The Cover Page of the Memorials shall be printed on:
    1. Petitioner/Appellant Blue A4 Paper
    2. Respondent Red A4 Paper
  • Each Memorial shall have the following and only the following on its cover page:
    1. The team code on the upper right hand corner of the cover page
    2. The name and place of the forum
    3. The relevant legal provision under which it is filed
    4. Name of parties and their status on whose behalf the memorial is filed.
  • Teams shall cite authorities in the Memorial using footnotes following the Harvard Bluebook 20th Edition. Explanatory or illustrative footnotes are not allowed.
  • The Memorials shall be clip-bound. Spiral-bound staple-bound or soft-bound memorials will not be accepted.
  • Anonymity: Only the Participant Code shall be indicated on the Memorial. Once Participants are allotted Participant Codes, their names, year of study or other personal information shall not be mentioned on the Memorials. Failure to comply with this rule entails disqualification.

8.     CONTENTS OF MEMORIAL

The Memorials shall contain the following parts: –

  1. Cover Page
  2. Table of Contents
  • List of Abbreviations
  1. Index of Authorities
  2. Statement of Jurisdiction
  3. Statement of Facts (not exceeding 2 pages)
  • Statement of Issues
  • Summary of Arguments (not exceeding 2 pages)
  1. Arguments Advanced (not exceeding 20 pages)
  2. Prayer (not exceeding 1 page)

The Memorial (including all parts mentioned above) shall not exceed 30 pages.

9.     EVALUATION OF MEMORIAL

  1. Every Memorial will be marked on scale of 150.
  2. The Memorial shall be evaluated according to the following criteria:
  • Knowledge of Facts: 15 Marks
  • Knowledge of Law: 15 Marks
  • Proper and Articulate Analysis: 10 Marks
  • Depth and Use of Research: 20 Marks
  • Organization and Clarity: 20 Marks
  • Evidence of Original Thought: 10 Marks
  • Correct Format and Citation: 10 Marks

10. Researcher’s Test

  • There shall be a researcher’s test for the designated researcher of each team . Only the

designated researcher would be allowed to participate in the said test

  • The test will consist of objective-type questions covering the facts of moot problem . the relevant laws and general questions and legal principles involved
  • Only upon qualifying the Researcher’s Test , the team will be eligible for the

preliminary round .

  • The evaluation of researcher’s test shall be discretionary , and the decision of the

Coordinator and Moot Court Club shall be final.

11.  PENALTIES

 

Late Submission 1 mark per memorial every 12 hours

After the deadline of submission; disqualification beyond 48 hours

Wrong File Name 1 mark per Memorial
Failure to submit Memorial as one File 1 mark per Memorial
Exceeding page limits 1 mark per exceeding page
Failure to include the sections in the Memorial 3 marks per section
  1. EXCHANGE OF MEMORIALS
  • There shall be an exchange of Memorials between the respective opposing teams, in accordance with the fixtures as determined by Seeding, prior to all the rounds of the Competition.
  • The teams are prohibited from making any marks or sign on the exchanged Memorials.
  • The teams are prohibited from making any copies of the Exchanged Memorials.
  • At the conclusion of their respective Rounds, the teams are required to return the exchanged Memorials to the Court Officials of that Court Room.
  • Team codes revealed and lot drawn to decide side of argument (who speaks for petitioner/respondent).

13.  MARKING SCHEME

The following shall be the judging criteria:

  • Knowledge of law 10
  • Depth of research 10
  • Rebuttal 10
  • Incorporation of facts into the arguments 10
  • Interpretation of applicable law 10
  • Clarity of thought and organization of arguments 10
  • Style of Presentation 10
  • Originality 15
  • Obedience of the Court 10
  • Proper Uniform 5

  • Only one speaker per team may deliver the rebuttal or sur-rebuttal.
  • Time must be managed by teams within the total allotted time.
  • Court officers will signal when time is close to elapsing.

 

  1. Decision

Decisions by judges (oral and memorial adjudicators) are final and binding.Any protest or clarification must be submitted in writing to the Moot Court Committee in advance.

16. Disclaimer

  • The registration will be entertained on “First come First ” basis .
  • Participants are required to maintain anonymity throughout the competition . Any disclosure of the identity , including the name of the institution or team members , shall lead to disqualification .
