About Civis
Civis is a Mumbai-based non-profit organisation committed to fostering participatory democracy in India. It has built a platform that empowers citizens to engage with draft laws and policies, allowing them to understand proposed legislation and directly share feedback with policymakers. This feedback loop helps make governance more inclusive, transparent, and responsive.
The platform functions by:
- Aggregating all open draft laws and policies inviting public feedback
- Simplifying legal language for easier comprehension
- Translating content into regional languages
- Engaging citizens and collecting their inputs
- Analysing and submitting feedback to the government to aid in participatory law-making
About the Consultatio Fellowship
This unique fellowship is designed for recent law graduates interested in public policy and democratic engagement. The fellow will work across multiple verticals at Civis, contributing to various stages of the public consultation process and gaining hands-on experience in shaping policy through civic participation.
Key Responsibilities
Public Consultation Management
- Monitor new draft policies open for feedback at central, state, and local levels
- Track deadlines and updates, maintaining records on Trello and Civis’ admin panel
- Write, edit, and shoot video explainers for consultations
- Map relevant policy updates and maintain an archive of consultations
Policy Leaders Internship Programme
- Coordinate internship cycles, send invitations, and onboard cohorts
- Assign interns draft policies for translation into citizen-friendly formats
- Edit summaries and blogs as per Civis’ guidelines
- Conduct mid-cohort reviews and track intern performance
Strengthening the Consultation Ecosystem
- Build and update a comprehensive consultation database
- Track legal/policy changes related to consultation processes
- Analyse consultation data to extract insights
- Conduct awareness workshops in academic institutions
Outreach & Communications Support
- Draft emails informing Civis users when their responses are acknowledged by authorities
- Prepare scripts for WhatsApp/IVRS communication
- Record explainer videos for social media
- Assist with project-specific outreach and chatbot content creation
Governance Support
- Draft Citizen Engagement Reports for completed consultations
- Identify and track government partners and “PLCP Champions”
- Prepare consultation summaries for government use
Eligibility
- Recent law graduates from either a 3-year or 5-year programme
- Applicants should be committed to public policy and civic engagement
