About University of Lucknow
Established in 1867, the University of Lucknow is among India’s oldest government-run higher education institutions. About the Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law at the University of Lucknow has been a pioneering institution in legal education since its foundation in 1921. Initially, it started with three instructors, with Mr. Jag Mohan Nath Chak serving as its first Head and Dean. However, the real architect of the faculty was Prof. R.U. Singh, who systematically structured teaching and research, demonstrating immense enthusiasm and dedication. He remained the Dean until 1956 and played a crucial role in establishing the Faculty of Law at Delhi University and Banaras Hindu University.
Prof. Singh is also credited with drafting the Constitution of Nepal. Under his leadership and the efforts of other visionaries, the Faculty of Law, University of Lucknow, gained significant recognition. Notably, Dr. V.N. Shukla, an authority on Constitutional Law, was the first LL.M. graduate of the faculty, and his book on the Indian Constitution remains a significant legal reference. Similarly, Dr. A.T. Markos, the faculty’s first LL.D. graduate, later became the Director of the Indian Law Institute.
