About the Smt. Shakuntala Devi 2nd International Moot Court Competition, 2025

The School of Law, Galgotias University, proudly presents the Smt. Shakuntala Devi 2nd International Moot Court Competition, 2025, designed to challenge participants with a carefully crafted hypothetical case. This competition tests legal reasoning, advocacy techniques, and strategic argumentation. Participants will have the opportunity to present their arguments before a distinguished panel of legal experts, ensuring a rich learning experience.

The 1st Edition (2024) of the competition, held from April 27–29, 2024, saw participation from 22 teams and was graced by eminent jurists, including:

  • Justice Indira Banerjee (Former Judge, Supreme Court of India)
  • Justice D.S. Dhaliwaal (Former Judge, Punjab & Haryana High Court)
  • Justice J.R. Midha (Former Judge, Delhi High Court)

Their invaluable insights greatly enriched the competition, providing participants with exposure to expert legal perspectives.

Moot Proposition

The case focuses on the intersection of freedom of speech, cyber regulations, and international human rights obligations, with key issues in constitutional law, cyber law, and international law. It critically examines the constitutionality of a cybersecurity law that mandates stringent regulation of digital content, particularly content perceived as a threat to national sovereignty, public order, and security. The problem explores whether such state-imposed restrictions violate the fundamental right to free speech, assessing compliance with international human rights frameworks, including obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) concerning digital censorship and freedom of expression.

Eligibility

The competition is open to undergraduate law students enrolled in a 3-year or 5-year LL.B. program at any recognized law school, university, or institution in India.
